Thomas the Apostle Center

Thomas the Apostle Center

Thomas the Apostle Center (TAC), a fully incorporated non-profit organization in its own right, is governed by a Board of Directors. It also works in close conjunction with the Foundation for the Episcopal Diocese of Wyoming, from whom it leases the houses and some of the land which was recently donated to the Foundation. This association has been most fruitful. The Center was founded, with the completion of the larger guest house in 1990 on ranch land Daphne Grimes had inherited from her parents, George and Dorothy Buchanan. It was inspired by a vision she had had when living in England with her husband, Thomas E. Grimes. They had returned to the States in 1978, building the main house. After Tommy’s untimely death and Daphne’s ordination to the priesthood in 1986, she began the process of realizing that vision. She was helped in this by two friends from Houston, Ann Wafer and Mary Kauwell, who joined her in 1990. They retired in 2006, and are living, as is Daphne, in separate houses on the property.

Located on the slopes of Dinosaur Ridge (named for its shape) just south of Cody, the Center has almost 300 acres of land. One hundred of the acres, containing a small alkali lake liked by many birds, are a permanent wildlife sanctuary. A large main house, with chapel and theological library, also serves as a refectory for group meetings and retreats. Directors Connie and Jay Moody live on the property in one wing of the house. There are two guest houses, one with six bedrooms, three baths, two smaller gathering rooms, and a large meeting and/or dining area served by a fully equipped self-help kitchen. The other guest house has four bedrooms, two baths, a powder room, gathering space and a large conference room which also serves as a gallery for the bronzes, icons and oils of the Rev. Daphne Grimes (any sales go to the Center). The Center is an ecumenical, interfaith retreat center, operating with the support of the Episcopal Diocese of Wyoming. TACis dedicated to fostering spiritual, physical and intellectual growth in a quiet, reflective environment, and seeks to model a way of life that cares for the people that are served and for the gift of God’s creation.

Many groups and individuals who have been served come from the Cody area, all over Wyoming, the country and indeed, the world. Activities include diocesan training programs and meetings, EfMmentor training, vestry retreats from churches of various denominations, family reunions, individual and group spiritual retreats, meetings for hospital, environmental and educational groups, and well-organized youth groups. One, the Big Horn Blast for mid-teenagers, has been operating for a week each summer for several years. The Center is now ably run by Directors Jay and Connie Moody.
