Mustard Seed MissionThe word discernment comes from the Latin word discerene, which means to separate or to be distinguished from. In the tradition of the Church, discernment refers to the work done to distinguish between the will of God and the desires of both others and ourselves. Christ sums up the point of discernment as He prays in the garden of Gethsemane, "Father... not my will but yours be done." (Luke 22:42) Because each of our churches is being offered $12,000 to fund a Mustard Seed Mission project, this is a wonderful opportunity to explore group discernment and find out what new vision God might have in store for your congregation. Even if you think you know exactly what to do with this gift for mission, please consider stepping back and asking with others in your church, "What is God's will for our congregation and the use of this money?" You may be surprised at the different and exciting possibilities which emerge! This brochure gives some very basic guidelines for a group discernment process consisting of only four steps, done in 4 two-hour meetings. During each meeting, there are three activities to engage in: A) Begin with reading and studying the suggested scripture and praying together. B) Explore the meetings topics. C) Give assignments to prepare for the next meeting and close with prayer. The diocesan staff stands ready to help and consult with you at any time. (Your congregation may want to spend a longer time and go deeper with this process. Please see the resources on the back cover and visit the new diocesan website for more ideas and tools: www.wyomingdiocese.org/mustardseedmission) Now let's get to planting those Mustard Seeds! |
